Intraocular Lenses (IOLs)

These artificial lenses are used at our offices in and around San Luis Obispo for cataract treatment through eye surgery that replaces the eye's cloudy natural lens.

About IOLs
In the past, the only IOL option was a monofocal lens, which improves vision at only one distance. These are a vast improvement over the clouded lenses that they replace, but still require the patient to wear corrective lenses to see at closer distances. The new, premium/advanced IOLs that we offer are capable of solving more vision problems than ever before.
There are several types of premium IOLs used for cataract treatment in custom cataract surgery:
- Multifocal Lenses such as AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR®, ReZoom® or Tecnis® multifocal IOLs are designed to correct a full range of vision, including near, far, and in between, for a return to your natural, youthful vision after cataracts.
- Accommodating Lenses such as the Crystalens® can "flex" or "accommodate," using the eye's natural muscles to focus on subjects at various distances, delivering a continuous range of vision. They can even correct age-related presbyopia, helping patients see at a close range.
- Toric Lenses (acrysofiqtoric.com) designed for people with astigmatism.
Premium lenses may also come with additional "bonus features" such as UV or blue light protection. "Premium" lenses are named as such because they offer additional benefits beyond the traditional monofocal lens. These lenses are not typically covered by Medicare or other insurance plans because the benefits that they provide are not medically necessary.
