Why do I need a comprehensive eye exam?

Of your five senses, your sight is arguably the most important, which makes caring for your vision very important. The best way to do that is through regular comprehensive eye exams with the eye specialists at Pacific Eye in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.

While determining whether you have any visions problems is an important part of your comprehensive eye exam, the ophthalmologists and optometrists at Pacific Eye also check your eyes for signs of more serious problems. For example, a simple test called tonometry screens for glaucoma by measuring the fluid pressure in your eyes.

Your eye specialist also checks the health of your retina during a comprehensive eye exam, which is especially important for people with diabetes and high blood pressure (hypertension) who are at risk for retinopathy. In addition to glaucoma, your eye specialist also checks for early signs of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

If you’re having problems with your eyes, such as red eyes or dry eyes, an eye exam provides an opportunity to discuss the problem and get started on a treatment plan.

What happens during a comprehensive eye exam?

When you come in for your comprehensive eye exam, your eye specialist discusses any problems you may be having and then performs several tests, including:

Your comprehensive eye exam is somewhat dictated by any previous problems you’ve been having and whether you’re experiencing any issues since your last exam. Since each patient at Pacific Eye has their own concerns, the eye specialists make sure to address your unique situation.

How often do I need a comprehensive eye exam?

The answer to this question largely depends on your medical history and age. If you have healthy eyes and you’re under 40, you should get a comprehensive exam every five years. As you get older, however, you should see the specialists at Pacific Eye once every year or two.

Again, the regularity of your eye exams is a decision best made between you and your specialist based upon your existing eye health and risk factors.
