LASIK Q & A

What is LASIK?

LASIK, or laser-assisted in situ keratomileuses, first burst onto the scene in 1995 and has since helped millions of people around the world correct a host of vision problems, including:

  • Myopia, or nearsightedness
  • Hyperopia, or farsightedness
  • Astigmatism

To enable you to see clearly, your eyes take in and refract light, starting with your cornea. From your cornea, the light is then focused onto your retina through your lens. Your retina sends the information through your optic nerve to your brain in the form of electrical impulses, where an image is formed. Any breakdown in this highly complex system can distort the information that your brain receives, resulting in blurry images.

With LASIK, the team at Pacific Eye corrects the point of entry for light — your cornea. By reshaping your cornea with laser eye surgery, your doctor corrects your refractive error, which allows your retina to receive, and send, the correct information, thereby improving your vision.

What is the IntraLase LASIK technique?

Using the IntraLase innovation, the eye specialists at Pacific Eye are able to turn your LASIK surgery into a custom, bladeless vision correction procedure.

Your doctor performs LASIK in two steps. First, they create a corneal flap, which they pull back to allow them access to reshape the corneal tissue underneath. In the past, this first step was done with a blade. With IntraLase, your doctor uses a computer-guided laser beam to create the flap, allowing them better precision and accuracy in creating the right flap for your unique eye.

After creating your custom flap, your doctor at Pacific Eye turns to VISXⓇ laser technology to reshape your cornea. This advanced excimer laser uses wavefront technology to make a detailed map of your eye, allowing your doctor to customize your vision correction by matching it your eye’s unique characteristics. This technique reduces the incidence of some common side effects of traditional LASIK surgery like glare, halos, or problems with night vision.

When will I see results?

The IntraLase LASIK procedure at Pacific Eye takes only minutes and you’re free to return home afterward, though you’ll need to arrange for someone to drive you.

When you wake the next day, you may see an immediate improvement in your vision. It’s not uncommon, however, for your vision to be slightly blurry for a week or two after the procedure as your eyes adjust, especially if you had more serious refractive problems.
