Top Cataract Surgery Questions from Our Patients
Cataract surgery is one of the most common and successful procedures performed in the U.S., but patients often come to Pacific Eye Surgeons with the same concerns. From what happens during surgery to how long recovery takes, it’s normal to want clear, trustworthy answers before moving forward.
Here are the five most frequently asked cataract surgery questions we hear in San Luis Obispo and across the Central Coast.
1. Are You Awake During Cataract Surgery?
Yes—you’ll be awake, but completely comfortable. The eye is numbed using local anesthesia (usually with drops), and a light sedative may be given so you feel relaxed. The surgery itself is fast, often under 20 minutes, and most patients report little more than seeing bright lights or mild pressure.
2. Can Cataract Surgery Be Performed More Than Once?
Cataract surgery is a one-time procedure. Once the cloudy lens is replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL), cataracts cannot redevelop. Occasionally, a patient may develop a condition called posterior capsule opacification (PCO), which can blur vision months or years later. If this happens, it can be corrected with a quick, painless YAG laser treatment in the office.
3. Does Medicare Cover Laser Cataract Surgery?
Yes—Medicare covers standard cataract surgery with a basic IOL. If you choose advanced technology like trifocal or toric lenses, or opt for laser-assisted techniques, Medicare covers the standard portion of the procedure, and patients pay the difference for upgrades.
Our team provides transparent cost breakdowns and financing to make surgery more accessible.
4. How Long Should I Wear an Eye Shield at Night?
Protecting the eye after surgery is critical. Most patients wear an eye shield while sleeping for at least one week, though your surgeon may recommend longer depending on healing progress. The shield prevents accidental rubbing and keeps the eye safe while it’s most vulnerable.
5. How Long Is Recovery After Cataract Surgery?
Vision often improves within a day or two, but complete healing takes 4–6 weeks. During this time, you’ll use prescribed eye drops and follow activity restrictions like avoiding heavy lifting or swimming. By the end of recovery, most patients in San Luis Obispo County enjoy clear, stable vision.
